English for Vocational Education (EVE)

Length: 12 weeks with 25 hours per week. (CRICOS 12 weeks)

English for Vocational Education (EVE) is a foundation course aimed at preparing students for their future vocational studies. There is particular emphasis on developing skills to aid students in the successful completion of assessment tasks in their chosen vocational course, building student confidence and increasing accuracy in the use of English.

This multi-level course allows students to develop skills and language specific to vocational courses. The aim of this course is to ensure that the learner will:

  • gain increased confidence in communicating with native English speakers
  • gain the skills and language necessary for vocational studies
  • develop study and organisational skills suitable for vocational courses
  • develop vocational vocabulary, writing and presentation skills
  • develop an increased awareness of the way the English language functions in an English-speaking country
  • develop an increased cultural understanding of an English speaking environment in the international context.

Entry requirements

5.0 IELTS or equivalent. Students will be required to sit a test on commencement to determine class level.

Suitability for overseas students

The course is designed for students from non-English speaking backgrounds who want:

  • a bridging program for articulation into vocational courses, particularly at Carrick Institute of Education
  • to increase their general and vocational English ability
  • to use and learn English in an exclusively English-speaking environment through real-life and vocational skills
  • to be a successful vocational student.

Teaching methods

  • Authentic samples of language and materials relevant to future vocational courses will be used as much as possible.
  • Learners will be encouraged to become independent and pro-active language learners.
  • Learners will be encouraged to practice their developing language skills outside the classroom.
  • Language will be recycled and reinforced regularly so that learners become proficient in linguistic skills, both within and outside of the classroom.
  • Learners learn at different rates and in different ways. These differences will be taken into account and catered for.

Materials used

Students are guided through resources including a student text, dictionary, internet-based resources, additional authentic texts via course books and other print/electronic resources.

It is required that all English language students purchase the prescribed student textbook (which costs approximately A$80), dictionary, exercise books and stationery.

Assessment

The following will be included as methods of assessment with an emphasis on a task-based communicative approach:

  • vocabulary and sentence writing
  • dictionary skills
  • writing job application letters
  • reading, writing and listening tests
  • oral and PowerPoint presentations
  • research and report writing
  • case study
  • observing student performance on assessments, tasks and exercises
  • observing classroom interaction, motivation and participation
  • student self-assessment tools, for example revision, vocabulary and class work diaries
  • mid-term student self-analysis
  • ongoing or post course discussion/interviews

English for Vocational Education (EVE) classes will be assessed on content covered during the course.

Qualification gained on completion

Students will receive a Certificate on completion of their course accompanied by level descriptors.

The successful graduating students have direct entry into vocational courses at Carrick Institute of Education.
