General English Language / ELICOS
The general english language program has six levels. Students receive 20 hours of regular classes plus 5 hours of electives every week for 12 weeks. All classes consist of face-to-face contact with a teacher and are run five days a week, Monday to Friday. Class availability is subject to student numbers. Courses start every Monday. Electives are tailored to meet student needs and requests. Common electives include Australian Conversation, English Movies, Pronunciation and IELTS and many more.

Entry requirements
Placement is determined by a reading, writing and grammar test followed by an oral interview when the student enters the institute. Level placement is based both on the student’s knowledge of English and ability to communicate. Level placement is monitored by class teachers and students are interviewed after one week of placement to make sure their level is correct.
Assessment
Student’s progress is regularly monitored through task-based assessment and progress checks. At the end of the program, students are awarded a Carrick Institute of Education Certificate of Attendance and an Achievement Report which indicates their completion level.
Materials used
A variety of materials are used including the course book, videos, CD-ROMs, graded readers, internet based language resources and articles from newspapers and magazines. It is required that all English language students purchase the prescribed textbook and workbook, which costs approximately A$70.
Beginner Level
This level is for students with no prior knowledge of the English language. Students learn to use basic tenses to talk about the past, present and future time. They learn to understand and use basic conversational English.
Elementary level
The Elementary level is for students who have a very basic knowledge of English. Students learn to use different tenses to talk about the past, present and future time. They take part in basic conversational English.
Pre-intermediate level
At this level students will be able to use a variety of tenses and structures. They will learn to write short texts, understand and use English on the telephone, make deductions from given information and use specific language for certain situations.
Intermediate level
At the Intermediate level the student develops the use of a variety of English language structures. Students extend their writing skills and will be able to write short texts such as e-mails and personal letters. There is a focus on listening comprehension and there is further development of the student’s ability to use real English in real situations.
Upper Intermediate Level
At this level students will be able to use a variety of tenses and structures to express themselves and understand longer, more complicated listening texts. They will be able to read for specific information and exact meaning. They will also take part in discussions and interviews. Furthermore, students will improve their ability to write and edit various texts.
Advanced Level
At this level students will be able to read, understand and use an extended range of language for a range of communicative purposes, taking context and audiences into account. Students will be equipped to give oral presentations, use English for work, extract hidden meaning from text and listen for substance, detail and inference.
