High School Preparation

Course commences: Every Monday

Length: From 20 to 40 weeks (CRICOS 46 weeks)

Carrick Institute of Education takes care of all its students but is particularly aware of the needs of young students who are preparing to enter an Australian high school. The institute offers these students a safe and secure environment, providing them with their own designated classrooms where their English language, personal and social needs are always met.

(CRICOS Course Codes: Melbourne 051253A)

Students can choose to study 20, 30 or 40 weeks in order to acquire the necessary English for successful study of the key curriculum areas of mathematics, science, social studies and information technology.

Students are taught meta-skills such as research, study skills and collaborative learning techniques. This, combined with a regular homework program, means students are prepared to not only enter an Australian high school but to excel there.

Students are also encouraged to participate in a weekly sports program and various social programs organised by the institute and computer sessions in one of the institute’s laboratories.

Carrick Institute of Education provides a range of services to support students during their time in Australia. For more information, please look at Student Services.

Carrick Institute of Education’s specialist English language teachers have experience in teaching students of high school age. The HSP program prepares students for success in the country’s best private and government high schools.

Assessment

Assessment for the course is conducted both formally and informally. Students’ participation and effort in class, ability to complete the set homework tasks and independent study skills are constantly observed and assessed.

On successful completion of the program each student will receive a Certificate of Participation and a report of their level of ability, noting any areas requiring attention. The assessment report clearly and realistically informs parents/guardians and the receiving school of the student’s level of language and preparedness for school life.

Materials used

Students are guided through resources including class texts, other print resources, videos, CD-ROMs and internet-based resources. It is required that all students purchase the prescribed textbook, which costs under A$100.

Accommodation and guardianship

Carrick Institute of Education can arrange Homestay accommodation. For students under 18 years of age the institute can also arrange the selection of a suitable guardian (English-speaking local residents over 21 years of age) if required. For information about Homestay accommodation options and Guardianship pricing please refer to Student Services.

Guardians are aware of their duty of care, which includes supervising homework, looking after the student’s medical requirements and ensuring that the student in their care is getting enough sleep and being adequately fed. They monitor academic progress and school attendance, maintaining regular contact with the institute and the student’s parents.
