IELTS Preparation (Full-time)

Course commences: Every Monday

Length: 12 weeks at 25 hours per week (CRICOS 12 weeks)

The IELTS Preparation course focuses directly on the skills students need to be successful in the IELTS examination. Students cover a variety of topics while developing their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Teachers also focus on preparing the students for the unique procedure of the IELTS examination.

This advanced course allows students to develop skills and language specific to the IELTS exam. The aim of the course is to ensure that the learner will:

  • gain increased confidence in using English to communicate with native speakers of English
  • gain the necessary skills needed for a successful IELTS exam result
  • practice the skills and language necessary for the IELTS exam format
  • develop academic vocabulary and writing skills to prepare for university study
  • achieve an IELTS score to meet university entry requirements
  • develop an increased awareness of the way the English language functions in an English-speaking country
  • develop increased cultural understanding of an English-speaking environment in an international context.

Entry Requirements

5.0 IELTS or equivalent.

Suitability for overseas students

The course is designed for students from non-English speaking backgrounds who:

  • seek a bridging program for articulation into university
  • want to study a vocational course at Carrick Institute of Education
  • want to study at university or further education institute in Australia
  • want to increase their general and academic English ability
  • want to use and learn English in an English-speaking environment
  • want to succeed in the IELTS exam.

Teaching methods

  • Authentic samples of language will be used as much as possible.
  • Learners will be encouraged to become independent language learners.
  • Learners will be encouraged to practice their developing language skills outside the classroom.
  • Learners do not master a particular linguistic element or aspect of language after a single exposure, therefore tasks and language will be recycled and represented.
  • Learners learn at different rates and in different ways. These differences will be taken in account and catered for.

Assessment

Some of the following may be included as methods of assessment:

  • observing student performance on tasks
  • observing classroom interactions
  • recording mastery on skills checklists
  • diagnostic assessment instruments
  • student self-assessment instruments, for example: surveys and journals
  • ongoing or post course discussion / interviews.

IELTS classes will be tested on content covered during the course. The graduating students then have the option to sit the external IELTS exam. Alternatively, on successful completion of the course, students will be given direct entry into vocational courses at Carrick Institute of Education.

Materials used

Students are guided through resources including class texts, internet-based resources, CD-ROMs, DVDs and other print resources. It is required that all students purchase the prescribed textbooks which cost approximately A$80.

Qualification gained on completion

On completion of their course students will receive a certificate accompanied by level descriptors.
